Looking Ahead: The Future of Organic No-Till Farming

While results from research focused on the no-till cover crops roller/crimper (R/C) have been mixed, researchers are optimistic about its future as a viable method of weed control in organic no-till systems. As demand for organic produce increases, so do the costs associated with its management. The no-till cover crops R/C shows promise as an efficient alternative to conventional practices that could save farmers time and money, and benefit the environment as well.

Research incorporating the use of various cover crops R/Cs into no-till organic systems continues at KBS and throughout the United States. There is much to be done if we are to harness the full potential of this system, including determining the effects of different seeding rates, rolling and planting dates, and the use of different types and styles of roller/crimpers.
