Cover Crop Roller/Crimper results - 2004

soybeans growing in crimped rye/hairy vetchIntroduction
The first year with the roller/crimper was a very good year. The cereal rye had excellent growth, and the hairy vetch had good growth.

Methods
Hairy vetch was planted at 45 lb/A Aug. 15 and winter rye planted at 2 bu/A Sept. 9, 2003 into a replicated complete block field design consisting of four replications. The covers were rolled at flowering June 4, 2004, and dark hilum feed-grade soybeans were drilled into the crimped mat four days later in 7.5-inch rows at 180,000 seeds/A. No additional tillage or supplemental weed control methods were used. Weed control throughout the season was excellent.

results
The soybeans were harvested Oct. 7, 2004. Soybean yields of 58 bu/A and 62 bu/A were harvested for hairy vetch and rye, respectively. In comparison, the average soybean yields in the surrounding area were 40 bu/A in 2004.
